How to network in person and on social media
Oct 13, 2022Do you find your clients in networking meetings? Love to listen to other people's problems and help them to achieve the results they want.
Sometimes what comes to us, incredibly naturally in person feels totally wrong when we're on social media. But why? There must be a reason. I am naturally nosy! And love to help others. So for a long time I posted on social media, I ran ads but I didn't reach out and contact people.
I didn't like to "intrude" on people on social media. Where it wouldn't cost me a thought in real life. Does that sound familiar?
In real life I am interfering (in a good way!) I like to call it interested in people. I will network anywhere!
Let's see if you pass the test and join me in solidarity of total nosiness. (Also known as "being interested in others.")
- When you stand in a coffee queue, with total strangers behind you having a conversation, can you resist listening to them?
- Can you totally ignore them as they discuss the fact that they desperately need assistance with something (that you know you can help with, or know someone who can help)?
- How long on average does it take before you turn and say... I couldn't help but overhear...
- Was your office nickname ever "Meercat?"
If the answers to these questions highlight an interest in other people, a tendency towards interested in helping... perhaps even towards being slightly distracted by other people! Then you're my kind of person.
Now, here's the next question.
Do you have that same insatiable quest to help others on social media?
So for example, if your ideal client is a health coach, then do you reach out to health coaches and get to know them on LinkedIn, or Instagram or Facebook Groups?
Or if you are a career coach, do you chat with the people that you want to help?
Because if you would naturally chat to the person behind you in the queue for the bus, or the train, or coffee, then why not chat here on social media?
Do you have some peculiar idea that you can't strike up business friendships or connections online?
I don't know how old you are. But if you had penpals as a child, then can you honestly tell me that your idea about not building or leveraging a relationship with someone you have never met before is in fact anything other than a mindset issue?
I have met, helped, and signed up many clients here on LinkedIn. You know who you are. I think you're amazing! And the fact of the matter is that, with the right support, anyone can sell on social media. I know this, because I do it and my clients do it.
So if you are as nosy as I am. Know that it's a beautiful talent. Ask yourself what is stopping me from using my interest in others here on this huge social media platform of people who are open to networking with each other?
You have to think... is it the sales bit? Or is it the social media bit?
If you want to grow a business that doesn't rely on your turning up in person then online networking AND networking on social media could really help you to get the results you want.
You need to stop thinking of how you act on social media as any different to how you would act in person.
So before you reach out to someone, after connecting with them for two seconds and immediately trying to sell to them STOP! Think, would I do this in person? Surely you'd try to find out about a new friend or client before you tried to offer them advice.
