How to Create an Online Course
Feb 17, 2023Have you ever strayed off the path and ended up at a similar destination? As my maternity leave ended in 2018 I realised that I didn’t want to go back to my advertising consultancy business. The world of advertising had lost its shine for me. It had changed from being a fun creative space that I had loved and I needed a new challenge.
Some people take a small step away from their career but I took a giant leap! I retrained as a kids yoga teacher. My daughter was born with Down Syndrome in 2017 and at a Mum and Baby Yoga class our teacher mentioned that yoga could be really good for her development. Some Mums would say, “Great!” and bring their kid to a class but not me. I went and did a kids yoga teacher training course. I loved it.
It was creative, fun, imaginative and it inspired me. I built a brand called Enchanted Yoga and started teaching privately and also in some schools. I added on to my learning and my teaching and began to teach and support parents through yoga. And while I enjoyed teaching, it didn’t give me the flexible timetable that I needed to support my daughter’s appointments and to suit our family life.
When everyone moved online in 2020, I was one of the first to embrace the online space. Because I’d worked in marketing for so long the systems were easy for me to understand. And within no time I had started to develop my social media profiles and online courses.
Slowly but surely word got out to my yoga colleagues that I could help them with their marketing and with systems advice and I rejoined my marketing path.
Over the course of two years I realised that I could better support people with the knowledge and experience I had built over twenty years in marketing. So I developed my first marketing course for yoga teachers.
My first attempt at a course on Kajabi, the learning management system that I used, was honestly terrible! The content was good but it was too long. While I got good feedback from students who took the course, the sales weren’t amazing!
Over time I improved my offer, my sales page, and shortened the course considerably! Now I offer different marketing courses for small businesses to improve their social media.
The online course space is huge. And it can become a great way to allow people with different budgets to work with you. I have a one to one, high ticket coaching program that runs across 6 months. But I also run workshops and share courses.
You could do the same thing.
Creating an online course can be a great way to share your knowledge or expertise with others. Here are some steps you can take to get started:
- Start by deciding what topic and level of expertise you want to cover in your course. Make sure it’s something that you’re knowledgeable and passionate about.
- Develop a course outline that will provide structure and guide your content creation.
- Break down your course into individual lessons and create content for each one. This could include videos, audio files, text and visuals.
- Choose a delivery platform for your course. There are many options to choose from, so research the ones that best meet your course needs.
- Decide how much you will charge for your course and create a payment plan.
- Promote your course by setting up a website, sending out emails and posting to social media.
- Launch your course and deliver your content to your students.
Creating an online course can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience. With a bit of planning and preparation, you can make it a success!
One thing that I have to share with you is that, if you want it to be a success then you have to market it. So as much as everyone talks about passive income from online courses, there is a good amount of effort involved in promoting it to the right people so that you get to do the “I got a sale dance!”
