From Struggle to Success: My LinkedIn Client Attraction Story

In January 2022, I went all in on LinkedIn and networking as the last roll of the dice to run my own coaching business. I dreamed of having a more flexible schedule. I didn't want to go back to working long hours as a consultant in an ad agency. I wanted to say bye bye to both the pressure and the commute!

The Initial Win (That Didn't Last)

Within just one month of strategically using LinkedIn to promote my marketing coaching services, I landed my first high-ticket client. The momentum continued, and three more clients followed in quick succession.

I was ecstatic. This was working! Or so I thought.

What I didn't realize was that I hadn't built a sustainable foundation. I hadn't done the internal work necessary to truly believe in my value as a coach. When challenges inevitably arose—a client ghosted me before reappearing, another fired me then rehired me—my confidence crumbled.

The Detour

Instead of pushing through, I retreated to what felt safe. I took a digital marketing contract while I "licked my wounds."

The irony wasn't lost on me. I delivered massive results for this organization—growing their social following and successfully promoting their signature event (the delightfully named "Totally Terrific Tomato Festival"). I was great at marketing... for others.

But I had taken my eye off my own business. When the contract ended in August, I realized my coaching leads had dried up completely. I was back at square one.

The Turning Point

This time, I did something different. Instead of trying to figure it all out alone, I invested in a coach for myself. Someone who could help me refine my networking strategy, improve my sales calls, and—perhaps most importantly—rebuild my confidence.

This was the game-changer.

I realized that sustainable success on LinkedIn isn't about quick wins or overnight success stories. It's about:

  1. Clarity of message - Knowing exactly who you serve and how
  2. Consistent visibility - Showing up regularly, even when client work gets busy

The best About sections aren't just professional biographies—they're strategic tools that speak directly to your ideal clients' pain points and desires. By incorporating relevant keywords and speaking directly to your audience's challenges, you make yourself easily discoverable.

Your work history needs to do more than list job titles—it should highlight the specific results you've achieved that position you as the expert your prospects need. When optimized correctly, this section becomes a powerful credibility builder.

4. Visual Branding That Makes You Memorable

In a sea of generic headshots and default banners, thoughtful visual branding sets you apart instantly. Your profile photo and banner should work together to reinforce your personal brand and make you recognizable.

The Reality Check

I'll be honest—implementing these changes wasn't always easy. There were days when imposter syndrome crept back in. Moments when I questioned if I was on the right path.
